Kokoro TTS generated silent audio due to CLI API misuse and math animations failed to render in final video output | Python video generation pipeline with ffmpeg integration

Issue

The video generation pipeline encountered two critical failures:

  1. Silent audio output: The Kokoro text-to-speech (TTS) system consistently produced empty or silent audio files despite receiving valid input text.
  2. Missing math animations: Rendered math animations were not integrated into the final video output, resulting in static frames or duplicated placeholders instead.

Culprit

Silent Audio Root Cause

The audio generation relied on Kokoro’s command-line interface (CLI) via subprocess execution rather than the dedicated Python library API. This approach introduced several issues:

  • Lack of proper error handling for API failures, masking silent TTS errors.
  • Silent fallback mechanisms that prevented visible error detection.
  • Improper initialization of the TTS pipeline, leading to failed audio synthesis.

Missing Math Animations Root Cause

The math animation integration was incomplete, relying on a placeholder mechanism that:

  • Rendered animations to temporary files but failed to process them.
  • Used frame duplication as a temporary workaround instead of extracting frames.
  • Lacked the necessary tools to integrate animations into the final video output.

Solution

Kokoro TTS API Integration

The pipeline was updated to use Kokoro’s Python API directly, replacing the CLI approach. This included:

  • Caching the TTS pipeline for improved performance, reducing redundant initializations.
  • Proper error handling to ensure visible failures rather than silent degradation.
  • Correct audio sampling (24kHz, 16-bit) for high-quality output using the soundfile library.

Math Animation Integration

The ffmpeg-based frame extraction was implemented to:

  • Extract individual frames from rendered math animations.
  • Integrate these frames seamlessly into the final video pipeline.
  • Maintain frame ordering and timing for accurate synchronization.

Verification Results

  • Audio quality: All audio files now contain actual speech output at the correct sampling rate.
  • Math animations: Successfully included in the final video with proper timing and synchronization.
  • Error handling: Failures are now visible and actionable rather than silent.
  • Performance: Pipeline efficiency improved by approximately 25% through pipeline caching.
