X API v2 returns 403 Forbidden for videos >10 minutes despite Premium subscription | Unarchived permanent errors caused endless retry loops in the upload watcher system

Issue

The video upload system encountered persistent failures when processing videos longer than 10 minutes due to API restrictions. These failures resulted in stuck processing states, repeated retry attempts, and inefficient resource usage. Videos that exceeded the API’s length limit were incorrectly handled, leading to system inefficiencies and wasted computational effort.

Culprit

The root cause of the issue was a mismatch between API subscription tiers and functionality. The API enforced a strict 10-minute limit for video uploads, even for users with premium subscriptions that allowed longer videos through other interfaces. Additionally, the system lacked a mechanism to archive failed uploads that exceeded these limits, causing them to remain in the processing queue and triggering unnecessary retry attempts.

Solution

Permanent Error Handling

The system was updated to archive videos that exceed API length limits immediately upon failure. This ensures that such videos do not remain in the processing queue or trigger repeated retry attempts, thus improving system efficiency.

Validation and Pre-Processing

A pre-upload validation step was introduced to detect videos exceeding API limits early and fail fast, preventing unnecessary processing attempts. This reduces resource waste and improves overall system responsiveness.

Documentation and Configuration

Clear documentation was added to outline API tier limitations and best practices for configuration, ensuring that future deployments avoid similar misconfigurations. This includes guidelines for selecting the appropriate API tier based on video length requirements.
