Python uploader makes unnecessary `thumbnails().set()` API calls for YouTube Shorts despite auto-generated thumbnails | Custom thumbnails briefly appear in Studio backend but never display to users

Issue

A Python-based video upload system unnecessarily consumed YouTube API quota by uploading custom thumbnails for Shorts videos. Despite YouTube automatically generating thumbnails from video frames for this format, the system attempted to upload custom thumbnails, resulting in wasted API calls. Although custom thumbnails briefly appeared in YouTube Studio’s backend interface, they were never displayed to end users.

Culprit

The thumbnail upload logic universally applied to all videos, regardless of format. It checked only for the presence of a thumbnail (video.has_thumbnail()) without considering the video type. This approach failed to account for YouTube’s platform-specific behavior, where Shorts automatically generate thumbnails while horizontal videos require custom thumbnails.

Solution

The thumbnail upload process was modified to exclude Shorts videos. A platform-type check was added to determine whether to proceed with thumbnail uploads, leveraging YouTube’s documented behavior for Shorts. This ensured:

  • Optimized API quota usage: Eliminated redundant thumbnail uploads for Shorts, preserving quota for critical operations.
  • Consistent behavior: Maintained existing thumbnail upload behavior for horizontal videos.
  • Platform-specific handling: Utilized existing platform enumeration patterns to ensure compatibility with other platform-specific logic.

Technical Impact

  • Reduced API calls: Eliminated one unnecessary API call per Short upload.
  • Maintained functionality: Preserved thumbnail uploads for videos requiring custom thumbnails.
  • Leveraged platform behavior: Aligned with YouTube’s documented thumbnail generation process for Shorts.

The solution ensures efficient API usage while maintaining the integrity of custom thumbnails for videos that require them.
