Auto-generated videos suffered from cumulative timing drift where text lagged behind audio, especially after numerical segments | Root cause was WhisperX character misalignment and forced segment boundary clipping

Issue

The auto-generated videos exhibited severe text-audio desynchronization, where text overlays appeared 200-500ms after being spoken, causing cumulative drift that worsened progressively over 7-minute videos. This resulted in:

  • Delayed character appearances, particularly in technical terms like ‘numerical’.
  • Abrupt timing jumps during segment transitions.
  • Artificial delays introduced by visual-only characters (e.g., parentheses).
  • Audio stutters during transitions between code and text segments.

Culprit

1. Forced Segment Boundary Clipping

The system artificially constrained character timings to segment boundaries, introducing cumulative timing errors that compounded across segments.

2. WhisperX Character Misalignment

The system incorrectly mapped characters between the original text and WhisperX output, assuming a one-to-one correspondence. This caused misalignment, where WhisperX’s normalized text failed to match the intended spoken characters.

3. Artificial Duration for Visual-Only Characters

Visual-only characters (e.g., parentheses) were assigned a fixed duration of 250ms, introducing artificial delays that disrupted the natural flow of spoken content.

Solution

1. Removed Segment Boundary Clipping

Eliminated the artificial constraints on character timings, allowing WhisperX timings to flow naturally without forced adjustments. This reduced cumulative drift to less than 10ms across the entire video.

2. Fixed WhisperX Character Alignment

Realigned character timings by trusting WhisperX’s native alignment, ensuring accurate mapping between spoken content and visual text. This resolved the misalignment issues observed in technical terms.

3. Zero-Duration for Visual-Only Characters

Reduced the duration of visual-only characters to zero, eliminating artificial delays and ensuring seamless synchronization with spoken content.

Remaining Challenges

  • Audio stutters during transitions between code and text segments require further investigation.
  • Line break logic issues need to be addressed to ensure proper visual spacing in transitions.

This transformation significantly improved text-audio synchronization, maintaining sub-10ms drift across the entire video duration.
