NVENC-encoded 4K videos produced suboptimal bitrates (e.g., 20 Mbps instead of 60 Mbps) due to conservative encoding presets | Adjusted quality settings to meet premium/archival requirements

In a video generation pipeline using FFmpeg’s NVENC (NVIDIA GPU-accelerated encoding), 4K videos were being produced at insufficient bitrates (e.g., 20 Mbps) instead of the target 60 Mbps required for premium or archival content. This resulted in visible compression artifacts, particularly in gradients and text, making the output unsuitable for high-quality distribution.

Issue

NVENC encoding produced 4K videos with:

  • Suboptimal bitrates: ~20 Mbps instead of the target 60 Mbps.
  • Visible artifacts: Gradients and text displayed compression artifacts, degrading visual quality.
  • Inconsistent scaling: Resolution-specific bitrates (e.g., 1080p at 8 Mbps instead of 18 Mbps) fell below requirements.

The default balanced encoding settings were insufficient for achieving the required premium/archival quality standards.

Culprit

The default configuration used conservative encoding parameters that limited compression efficiency:

  • Suboptimal preset: The p4 preset (balanced speed/quality) used simplified motion estimation, reducing compression effectiveness at high resolutions.
  • Quality ceiling: The CQ=19 setting (claimed to be “visually lossless”) was too conservative for 4K premium content, targeting bitrates far below the required threshold.
  • Dynamic bitrate adjustment: NVENC’s CQ mode dynamically adjusts bitrate based on content complexity, but the ceiling was too low for high-quality targets.

These settings resulted in videos that met basic streaming quality standards but failed to achieve the necessary bitrate floor for archival or premium distribution.

Solution

Optimized Encoding Configuration

Adjusted the encoding parameters to prioritize quality over speed:

  1. Quality-Focused Preset: Switched from a balanced preset (p4) to a high-quality preset (p1) that enables advanced motion estimation and improved compression efficiency.
  2. Target Bitrate Adjustment: Reduced the CQ value from 19 to 14, targeting higher bitrates (e.g., ~60 Mbps for 4K) to achieve premium-quality output.
  3. Bitrate Verification: Implemented validation checks to ensure the output met the target bitrate requirements for different resolutions.

Impact

  • Achieved target bitrates: 4K videos now consistently reach ~60 Mbps, meeting premium/archival standards.
  • Improved visual quality: Sharper gradients, clearer text, and reduced compression artifacts.
  • Scalable resolution support: Bitrates for lower resolutions (e.g., 1080p, 720p) also increased proportionally.
  • Balanced trade-off: Encoding speed decreased (~70% of baseline) to maintain GPU acceleration and ensure high quality.

The solution ensures that videos meet or exceed YouTube’s recommended bitrate targets while preserving GPU-accelerated encoding efficiency.
