Wrangler CLI deployment fails despite successful build, showing 'Missing entry-point to Worker script or to assets directory' | Astro static site deployment to Cloudflare Workers requires explicit wrangler.jsonc configuration for asset directory and project metadata

Working with Astro 5.15.3 to deploy a static site via Cloudflare Workers using Wrangler 4.47.0, addressing deployment configuration issues while implementing comprehensive SEO metadata and dark mode compatibility.

Issue

The Cloudflare Workers deployment failed with the error Missing entry-point to Worker script or to assets directory despite a successful Astro build. The npx wrangler deploy command failed because Wrangler could not determine whether to deploy Worker scripts or static assets and lacked reference to the build output directory.

Additional issues included:

  • Missing SEO metadata (no description, Open Graph, or Twitter Card tags).
  • Unreadable dark mode link colors on dark backgrounds.

Culprit

Deployment Failure

The Wrangler CLI requires explicit configuration in wrangler.jsonc to specify:

  1. The type of deployment (Worker scripts or static assets).
  2. The location of the build output directory.
  3. Project metadata (name, compatibility date).

Without this configuration, Wrangler defaulted to Worker script mode but could not find a worker.js script, leading to the deployment failure.

SEO Metadata Gaps

The base layout lacked critical metadata tags, resulting in:

  • Generic search engine snippets.
  • Broken social media previews.
  • No branding in browser tabs.

Dark Mode Accessibility

Hardcoded dark link colors were invisible against dark backgrounds, as they did not account for dynamic color scheme preferences.

Solution

Cloudflare Workers Deployment

  • Configured wrangler.jsonc to explicitly point to the build output directory for static asset deployment.
  • Added project metadata such as the compatibility date and repository name.

SEO Metadata Implementation

  • Enhanced the layout with comprehensive metadata tags, including:
    • Title with branding and value proposition.
    • Meta description for search snippets.
    • Open Graph and Twitter Card tags for social sharing.

Dark Mode Compatibility

  • Implemented a media query to dynamically adjust link colors based on the user’s preferred color scheme.
  • Defined distinct color schemes for light and dark modes with appropriate hover states.

Repository Maintenance

  • Updated the repository remote to reflect a renamed repository.
