Global paragraph styling defaulted to browser base 1rem (16px) font size | Made lengthy technical blog content difficult to scan and read comfortably

Addressed readability issues in blog content by adjusting font size to improve comfort and scannability for lengthy technical articles. The default browser font size (1rem/16px) was insufficient for comfortable reading.

Issue

Blog post content appeared too small for comfortable reading, particularly for lengthy technical articles. The default font size caused visual strain and reduced content scannability, leading to user complaints about difficulty distinguishing between paragraphs during extended reading sessions.

Culprit

The global styling for paragraph elements defaulted to the browser’s base font size (1rem/16px), which lacked explicit control through the design system. This resulted in:

  • Inconsistent font sizes across browsers and user preferences.
  • Reduced readability for technical content requiring clear visual separation.
  • Visual strain due to small text in lengthy articles.

Solution

Implemented a global font size increase for paragraph elements by applying explicit styling to ensure consistent and comfortable readability. This involved:

Global Font Size Adjustment

Increased the default font size for all paragraph elements to improve readability while maintaining scalability with user preferences.

Key Implementation Details

  • Relative Unit: Used relative units to maintain scalability across different user settings.
  • Optimized Increase: Chose an optimal balance between readability and space efficiency.
  • Global Impact: Ensured consistency across all paragraph elements site-wide.

Results: Improved reading comfort with larger text while preserving existing layout integrity and responsive behavior. The solution was verified across various browsers, viewport sizes, and themes to ensure consistent readability.
