Developed a unified design system for card components in an Astro application to address visual inconsistencies in styling. The components previously used divergent background treatments, borders, and shadows, resulting in a disjointed user experience.
Issue
Card components across the application exhibited inconsistent styling. For example, different components used opaque backgrounds, semi-transparent overlays, or gradients, with no unified approach to borders or shadows. This inconsistency violated design principles and degraded visual cohesion.
Culprit
Three card components evolved independently without a shared design system, leading to:
- Divergent backgrounds: Some used solid colors, others semi-transparent overlays or gradients.
- Inconsistent borders: No standardized border treatment across components.
- Lack of shadow consistency: Shadows were applied differently or omitted entirely.
The absence of a centralized design system forced each component to define its own visual language, violating the DRY principle.
Solution
Implemented a cohesive design system by standardizing all card components with:
Unified Background Treatment
Adopted a consistent background approach for all card components, ensuring visual harmony across the application. This included defining a standardized opacity and color scheme for backgrounds.
Standardized Borders and Radius
Applied uniform border styling and rounded corners to all card components, enhancing visual consistency and improving the overall aesthetic.
Consistent Shadow Application
Defined a shared shadow treatment for all card components, ensuring a cohesive look and feel throughout the application.
Result: Achieved visual harmony across all card components, creating a cohesive UI design system. This solution maintains component-specific functionality while enforcing visual consistency through iterative refinement.
The approach resulted in a unified design language that emerged naturally, improving the overall user experience and design cohesion.
