Existing Astro portfolio required React framework integration with Tailwind CSS v4 and shadcn/ui components | Solution involved configuring React support in Astro, setting up Tailwind v4 with new import syntax, and initializing shadcn with custom theme

The project required integrating React, Tailwind CSS v4, and shadcn/ui components into an existing Astro portfolio to enable interactivity, modern styling, and reusable UI components. The goal was to create a cohesive design system with custom theming and support for light/dark mode while maintaining compatibility with legacy styling.

Issue

The Astro portfolio lacked:

  1. React support, limiting the ability to implement interactive elements.
  2. Modern styling system, relying on custom CSS for styling inconsistencies.
  3. Pre-built UI components, making it difficult to maintain consistent design patterns.
  4. TypeScript integration, preventing proper type safety for React components.

The existing static Astro components were insufficient for building dynamic and visually cohesive applications.

Culprit

The project was configured without:

  • React integration (missing React dependencies and Astro adapter).
  • Tailwind CSS setup (no Vite plugin or configuration files).
  • Component library (no shadcn initialization or component management system).
  • TypeScript support (no JSX configuration).

This lack of modern tooling and design systems led to inconsistent styling and limited interactivity.

Solution

React Integration

The project was configured to support React components by:

  • Installing React and related dependencies.
  • Setting up the Astro adapter for React support.
  • Configuring TypeScript to support JSX and React components.

This allowed the use of React components within Astro, enabling interactivity while maintaining Astro’s static site generation capabilities.

Tailwind CSS v4 Setup

Tailwind CSS v4 was integrated into the project by:

  • Installing Tailwind and the Vite plugin for processing.
  • Creating a Tailwind configuration file with updated import syntax.
  • Configuring Astro to process Tailwind CSS for styling.

This setup provided a modern utility-first CSS framework for consistent and maintainable styling.

shadcn/ui Initialization

The shadcn/ui component library was initialized to:

  • Create a custom theme with support for light/dark mode.
  • Establish a component registry and management system.
  • Configure path aliases for improved import handling.

This provided pre-built, customizable UI components that aligned with the project’s design system.

Interactive Component Implementation

A custom component (e.g., FlowingRibbons) was integrated into the project using shadcn’s CLI. This component was added to the page template with client-side hydration to ensure interactivity while maintaining the static nature of the site.

This comprehensive approach ensured:

  • Interactive elements via React.
  • Consistent styling through Tailwind CSS.
  • Reusable components from shadcn/ui.
  • Custom theming with light/dark mode support.
  • TypeScript compatibility for robust development.

The solution modernized the portfolio while preserving existing functionality and enhancing maintainability.
