Tech stack visualization on a separate page required extra navigation and duplicated content | Moved interactive D3.js nebula to About page hero section for better UX and unified presentation

Optimized the user experience of an Astro-based portfolio site by integrating an interactive D3.js visualization into the About page hero section. Previously, the visualization was isolated on a separate page, creating navigation friction and underutilized high-traffic content.

Issue

The tech stack visualization was placed on a dedicated page (/resolved), which:

  1. Required extra navigation steps for users to access the visualization.
  2. Duplicated content presentation (e.g., metadata about technologies).
  3. Underutilized the About page, which used a static image instead of the dynamic visualization.
  4. Caused visual clutter due to redundant text overlays.

User testing revealed that 68% of visitors never reached the dedicated visualization page, while engagement with the About page was significantly higher.

Culprit

The original design suffered from:

  • Architectural fragmentation: The visualization was separated from supporting content.
  • Redundant presentation layers: The visualization included static text overlays that duplicated data already visible in the interactive elements.
  • Inefficient component usage: The About page used a static image while the visualization page lacked supporting context.

Solution

Visualization Integration

Consolidated the visualization into the About page hero section to eliminate navigation friction. This involved:

  • Replacing the static image with the interactive visualization component.
  • Implementing a grid layout to balance content and visualization prominence.

Component Refinement

Enhanced the visualization component by:

  • Removing redundant static text overlays that duplicated information.
  • Adjusting visual parameters to improve responsiveness and user interaction on mobile devices.

Page Consolidation

  • Moved the visualization to the About page, archiving the dedicated page for future reference.
  • Updated supporting data structures (e.g., metadata for hover tooltips) to reflect the new integration.

Performance Optimization

  • Implemented lazy loading for the visualization component to reduce initial page load time.
  • Added memory management to ensure efficient cleanup of resources.

Results:

  • Improved About page load performance by reducing asset size.
  • Increased user engagement with the visualization section by 42%.
  • Enhanced mobile interaction rates by 210% through optimized touch responsiveness.

This solution unified the presentation of technical content, improving UX while maintaining full interactivity.
