Issue
Parallel video rendering processes in MoviePy encountered collisions when creating temporary audio files, leading to corrupted audio and failed renders. The default behavior generates predictable temporary filenames using a fixed pattern, causing multiple concurrent processes to overwrite or corrupt the same file. Users observed rendering failures despite correct output configurations.
Culprit
The root cause was MoviePy’s default implementation for temporary audio file generation, which relied on a predictable naming convention without uniqueness guarantees. When multiple rendering processes (e.g., for horizontal and vertical video formats) executed simultaneously, they attempted to write to the same temporary audio file path, resulting in race conditions and corrupted output.
Solution
To resolve the race condition, the implementation was modified to generate unique temporary files using a randomized naming scheme. This involved:
- Unique Temporary File Creation: Using a library function to generate temporary files with random suffixes, ensuring no conflicts across parallel processes.
- Explicit File Handling: Passing the unique temporary file path to the video writing function and ensuring proper cleanup through exception-safe mechanisms.
- Validation Testing: Confirming the solution’s robustness by testing parallel rendering scenarios, verifying unique file generation and proper cleanup in all cases.
The revised approach guarantees reliable parallel rendering by eliminating file collisions and ensuring temporary resources are managed correctly.
