Generated tutorial scripts cut off mid-explanation with missing code segments | Semantic role detection bug in middleware pattern parsing drops 68% of original code while still reporting EXCELLENT rating

A Python-based code generation system used semantic role detection to intelligently segment code into meaningful components (imports, class definitions, hooks) rather than relying on structural splitting. However, it encountered a critical issue where generated tutorial scripts were missing 68% of the original middleware class code, despite receiving high-quality ratings.

Issue

The generated tutorial scripts were incomplete, missing 17+ lines (68%) of the original middleware class code. Despite the system logging successful completion, the output contained only 60 lines (3,592 characters) with just two code segments explained (imports + partial class). Even after increasing MAX_TOKENS from 5,000 to 16,000, the issue persisted, indicating a parsing bug rather than token limitations.

Culprit

The detect_semantic_roles() function in the system’s generator module contained a code-dropping bug in its middleware pattern detection logic. While the function successfully identified middleware patterns and split initial segments (imports, class definition), it failed during method body parsing when searching for the call_next execution point. A complex 160-line parsing loop lacked a final segment collection mechanism, causing 68% of the original code to disappear silently without errors or warnings.

Solution

Temporary Workaround

To address the issue, a temporary workaround was implemented by disabling the buggy semantic role detection and falling back to a simpler blank-line splitting algorithm. This ensured complete code retention while debugging continued on the semantic detection logic.

Key Changes:

  1. Disabled Semantic Role Detection: Commented out the detect_semantic_roles() call to prevent the buggy parsing logic from executing.
  2. Fallback to Blank-Line Splitting: Implemented a simpler algorithm that:
    • Groups imports together.
    • Maintains function/class definitions.
    • Avoids complex pattern matching.
    • Preserves all original code.
  3. Verification Checks: Added checks to verify complete script generation:
    • Line count verification using wc -l.
    • Confirmation of closing sections (e.g., grep "Key takeaway").

Tradeoffs

  • Completeness: Ensured 100% code retention with no loss.
  • Semantic Awareness: Reduced to structural-only segmentation, losing some semantic awareness.
  • Complexity: Simplified to 80 lines of code compared to the original 160-line function.
  • Reliability: Achieved stable operation without silent failures.

Ongoing Debugging

The root cause of the bug remains under investigation, specifically focusing on the complex parsing loop where code segments fail to collect properly after pattern matching attempts.

Result: The workaround ensures complete and reliable script generation, while debugging efforts continue to resolve the underlying semantic segmentation bug.
