Issue
The evaluator component in the automated code documentation system was stuck in infinite validation loops, assigning ‘POOR’ ratings to both short (<20 lines) and long (≥20 lines) code inputs. Short code inputs failed due to a requirement for ‘multiple code blocks,’ while long code inputs were rejected for missing specific blocks referenced in the original code. This issue prevented the system from generating valid outputs despite the generator producing logically sound results.
Culprit
The root cause was an architectural mismatch between the generator and evaluator components:
- Substring validation conflict: The generator intentionally truncated code excerpts for readability, including only decorators, signatures, and a few lines of code. However, the evaluator required exact substring matches against the original code.
- Code block count inconsistency: The generator produced a single code block for short code inputs (<20 lines) with accompanying text explanations, while the evaluator enforced a requirement for at least two code blocks.
The validation logic in the evaluator assumed the generator would produce exact substrings and multiple code blocks regardless of input size.
Solution
To resolve these mismatches, the evaluator was updated with the following improvements:
Disabled Substring Validation
The evaluator now skips substring validation checks for code excerpts, acknowledging that truncation is intentional for readability. This allows the evaluator to accept logically valid excerpts even if they are not exact substrings of the original code.
Added Short Code Awareness
The evaluator now accounts for short code inputs by allowing a single code block accompanied by text explanations. This change was implemented using a configurable threshold for the minimum number of lines required to justify multiple code blocks, ensuring short code inputs are validated appropriately.
Key Enhancements
- Flexible validation: The evaluator now honors the generator’s design choices, such as truncated excerpts.
- Short code support: Short code inputs are validated with a single code block and explanatory text.
- Debug logging: Added logging to document validation decisions and improve transparency.
- Architectural alignment: Removed dependencies on language models (LLMs) by addressing the core architectural mismatch.
Result: Both short and long code inputs now achieve ‘GOOD’ or ‘EXCELLENT’ ratings within one to two iterations, eliminating the infinite loops and enabling the system to produce valid outputs efficiently.
