Issue
A Python-based automated system for generating and evaluating code explanations encountered structural mismatches between its generator and evaluator components. This led to two distinct failure modes that caused infinite refinement loops:
- Short code blocks (fewer than 20 lines) consistently failed with a requirement for multiple code blocks (full code + breakdown segments), regardless of refinements.
- Long code blocks (≥20 lines) failed substring validation checks, where excerpts were flagged as hallucinated due to intentional truncation during generation.
Both issues resulted in the system getting trapped in infinite loops, where the same structural errors repeated across refinement attempts, ultimately leading to max refinements being reached without resolution.
Culprit
Short Code Structural Mismatch
The generator and evaluator had conflicting expectations for handling short code:
- The generator produced a single code block for short segments, followed by text-only explanations.
- The evaluator, however, enforced a rigid requirement for at least two code blocks (full code + breakdowns) without accounting for the short code exception.
This mismatch caused short code to fail validation unconditionally, as the evaluator was unaware of the generator’s short code handling logic.
Long Code Substring Validation Failure
The excerpt generation and validation processes were misaligned:
- The generator intentionally truncated excerpts to focus on key parts (e.g., decorators, signatures, docstrings).
- The evaluator enforced exact substring matching between excerpts and the original code, which failed for truncated excerpts.
This conflict caused long code blocks to repeatedly fail validation, as the evaluator treated truncated excerpts as invalid rather than design choices.
Solution
Option A: Short Code Awareness in Evaluator (Recommended)
The evaluator was updated to recognize short code exceptions. It now checks the line count of the original code and allows a single code block for segments below a predefined threshold. This aligns the evaluator’s expectations with the generator’s output for short code.
Option B: Disable Substring Validation for Excerpts
The evaluator was modified to skip substring validation for excerpts generated by the system. This change acknowledges that excerpts are intentionally truncated and removes the validation constraint for these cases.
Combined Implementation
- Short code awareness was introduced to resolve the first issue, ensuring the evaluator accepts single-block outputs for short code.
- Substring validation was disabled for excerpts to address the second issue, allowing truncated excerpts to pass evaluation.
- The system was tested with:
- Short code (e.g., 9-line middleware): Previously failed → now passes.
- Medium-length code (e.g., 24-line component): Previously failed → now passes.
- Long code (e.g., 50+ line client): Previously failed → now passes.
Result: The system now achieves GOOD/EXCELLENT ratings within 1-2 refinement iterations across all test cases, eliminating infinite loops and improving overall performance.
