Basic FastMCP implementation missing context integration, progress reporting, and proper resource lifecycle | Tools used console.print() instead of MCP logging, had no progress tracking, and lacked server lifespan management

Issue

The system lacked structured logging and progress reporting, leading to poor visibility during long-running operations. Critical operations executed without feedback, causing confusion and perceived delays. Additionally, resources were not properly managed, and system configurations were not exposed effectively, making the system difficult to maintain and debug.

Culprit

The issues were primarily due to the following:

  1. Lack of Structured Logging: The system relied on basic output methods instead of structured logging, which did not provide visibility or context to clients interacting with the system.

  2. Missing Progress Tracking: Long operations did not report progress, leaving users unaware of the execution status and leading to uncertainty about completion times.

  3. Poor Resource Management: Resources were not managed systematically, leading to potential leaks and inefficient usage. There was no structured approach to initializing and cleaning up resources.

  4. Opaque System Configuration: Prompt templates and configurations were hardcoded and not exposed as accessible resources, making it difficult for clients to understand or utilize them effectively.

Solution

Structured Logging

The system was updated to use a structured logging mechanism that provides context and visibility to all interactions. This ensures that all operations are logged appropriately and can be tracked by clients.

Progress Reporting

Progress tracking was introduced to provide real-time updates during long-running operations. This allows users to monitor the execution status and estimate completion times.

Resource Management

Resource lifecycle management was implemented to ensure proper initialization and cleanup. This includes structured handling of resource creation and destruction to prevent leaks and improve efficiency.

Resource Exposure

Prompt templates and configurations were exposed as accessible resources within the system. This allows clients to interact with and utilize these resources more effectively, improving overall system transparency and usability.

Middleware Integration

Middleware components were added to provide additional functionality, such as logging and timing, across all tool calls. This ensures consistent behavior and improved observability across the system.

By addressing these issues, the system now provides better visibility, improved resource management, and enhanced usability for clients and users.
