Issue
A Python-based markdown processing system using Pygments for syntax highlighting encountered inconsistent styling for colon-prefixed labels (e.g., ‘Resources:’, ‘Prompts:’). The issue manifested as partial or incorrect turquoise coloring of these labels, where:
- Only the colon character rendered in turquoise (e.g., ‘Resources:’ displayed as ‘Resources:’ with only ’:’ colored).
- Portions of the label text remained unstyled (e.g., ‘Why This Slaps:’ displayed as ‘Why ’ in green and ‘This Slaps:’ in turquoise).
- The problem occurred consistently for text segments following code blocks, while text before code blocks rendered correctly.
Culprit
The root cause was a Pygments phantom whitespace bug, where the tokenization process generated more tokens than actual characters in the input string. Specifically:
- Pygments incorrectly added phantom
\ntokens to text segments, creating a mismatch between token positions and actual character positions. - This caused the
char_to_tokenmapping array to misalign, as token indices no longer corresponded to their intended characters. - As a result, the coloring logic applied styles to incorrect character ranges, leading to partial or incorrect label coloring.
Solution
Phantom Token Filtering
A bounds-checking mechanism was introduced to prevent processing of non-existent characters. This ensured that token indices aligned correctly with their corresponding characters, resolving the phantom token issue. The fix successfully addressed the partial coloring problem for text segments before code blocks.
Partial Results
- ✅ Fixed: Labels in text segments before code blocks now render correctly in turquoise.
- ❌ Still Broken: Labels in text segments after code blocks continue to display incorrectly (in green instead of turquoise).
Hypothesized Remaining Issues
- Character Index Offset: Misalignment in global character indices may persist after code block processing, causing incorrect token mapping.
- Segment Boundary Corruption: Transitions between code blocks and text segments may corrupt the character index mapping, leading to styling inconsistencies.
- State Persistence: The
char_colorsdictionary may retain incorrect mappings from previous segments, affecting subsequent text rendering.
Next Steps
To address the remaining issues, the following debugging and auditing steps are planned:
- Implement debug logging to verify character indices for text segments following code blocks.
- Audit the tokenization process for segments after code blocks to ensure proper substring extraction.
- Examine segment grouping logic to verify isolation and correct handling of text segments.
- Validate character indices in the
charslist to ensure accurate offsets across segment boundaries.
This will help identify and resolve the remaining inconsistencies in label coloring for text segments following code blocks.
