Dynamic text content exceeding viewport dimensions caused rendering artifacts at the bottom of the screen | Implemented a proactive scrolling system with safety margins to ensure full visibility

In a video generation system handling dynamic text content, text blocks (including code) frequently exceeded viewport dimensions, leading to content being clipped off-screen. The solution involved redesigning the rendering pipeline to include proactive scrolling with configurable safety margins.

Issue

Text content extending beyond the viewport height (e.g., 1080p or 1280p resolutions) was rendered partially off-screen, making up to 15% of the content unreadable. This occurred due to:

  • Lack of real-time overflow detection for long code blocks or multi-paragraph text.
  • Static rendering bounds without accounting for dynamic content expansion.
  • No safety margins for font descenders or variable line heights.

Culprit

The original implementation relied on reactive scrolling, which only triggered after text exceeded the viewport height. This approach:

  • Allowed visual artifacts (clipping) before scrolling occurred.
  • Used uniform checks without differentiating between rendering paths (e.g., syntax-highlighted code vs. plain text).
  • Failed to account for resolution-specific constraints (e.g., 1080p vs. 1280p).

Solution

A proactive scrolling system was introduced with the following design principles:

1. Dynamic Margin-Based Detection

  • Established a safety margin (15% of viewport height) to preemptively detect potential overflow.
  • Implemented incremental scrolling (e.g., scrolling in thirds of the viewport height) to maintain smooth rendering.

2. Path-Aware Rendering Logic

  • Differentiated handling for distinct content types:
    • Syntax-highlighted code: Applied stricter overflow checks due to larger font sizes.
    • Gradient/plain text: Used baseline line-height calculations with adjusted safety buffers.

3. Configurable Parameters

  • Viewport dimensions: Adjusted scroll increments based on resolution (e.g., 360px for 1080p).
  • Font metrics: Accounted for varying font sizes (e.g., monospace vs. proportional) in overflow detection.

Impact: Eliminated rendering artifacts by ensuring all text remains visible within the viewport. The system now dynamically adjusts scrolling based on content type and resolution, improving both usability and technical robustness.
