Debugging

A temporary database GUI tool was deployed to visually verify schema changes in PostgreSQL. The solution ensured secure access and ephemeral configuration for validation purposes.

After executing PostgreSQL schema migrations, the team needed a visual tool to verify table structures, data types, and constraints. Command-line inspection was inefficient for complex schema validation, particularly for verifying time-based columns and rating calculations.

Issue

The absence of a visual inspection tool created a bottleneck in the schema migration workflow. Specifically:

  • Manual verification of TIMESTAMP columns in the bookings table was inefficient.
  • Validation of average_rating calculations in the users table lacked visual clarity.
  • No convenient GUI tool was available for inspecting complex schema changes.

Culprit

The original deployment plan had the following issues:

  1. Used a non-versioned image tag (latest), violating production deployment guidelines.
  2. Included undocumented configuration variables, causing compatibility issues.

The lack of a visual inspection tool introduced a risk of undetected schema inconsistencies during validation.

Solution

Versioned Deployment

  • Deployed a versioned image of the database GUI tool to ensure consistency and security.
  • Specified resource limits to ensure stable performance within the Kubernetes cluster.

Secure Access

  • Configured ClusterIP service for secure access, ensuring the tool was not exposed externally.
  • Used port forwarding for authenticated access via kubectl.
  • Retrieving credentials from existing Kubernetes secrets ensured secure access to the database.

Ephemeral Configuration

  • Utilized non-persistent configuration to simplify deployment, accepting that connections would reset on pod restarts.
  • This tradeoff eliminated the need for persistent storage, simplifying the setup.

Verification Process

  • Executed SQL queries to verify the correctness of the schema changes, including:
    • Checking for TIMESTAMP columns in the bookings table.
    • Validating the average_rating calculations for users.

This solution provided a temporary yet secure database GUI for schema validation, ensuring the migration was accurate while maintaining production security standards.
