Payment MCP server lacked webhook endpoint to receive Stripe payment confirmations | Resulted in no async payment status updates, refund notifications, or failure handling

Issue

The payment MCP server lacked a mechanism to receive Stripe payment confirmations, resulting in no real-time payment status updates, refund processing notifications, or payment failure handling. This created a critical gap in the payment workflow, where payments could be initiated but their completion status could not be reliably confirmed.

Culprit

Three key technical gaps prevented the implementation of Stripe webhooks:

  • Missing Webhook Endpoint: There was no route to receive Stripe’s asynchronous notifications for payment events like payment_intent.succeeded or charge.refunded.
  • Unverified Configuration: The environment variables contained placeholder values for STRIPE_WEBHOOK_SECRET, lacking actual secret keys necessary for secure communication.
  • Architecture Inconsistency: Unlike the SNS email webhooks, which followed a robust pattern including signature verification and Redis-based deduplication, the Stripe integration lacked this infrastructure.

Solution

Webhook Endpoint Implementation

A dedicated /stripe-webhook endpoint was added to handle asynchronous notifications from Stripe. This endpoint includes:

  • Signature Verification: Validates incoming requests using Stripe’s webhook signature system to ensure authenticity.
  • Redis Deduplication: Uses Redis to track processed event IDs and prevent duplicate processing, with a 5-minute time-to-live (TTL) to handle retries.
  • Rate Limiting: Implements a rate limit of 100 requests per minute, in line with Stripe’s recommendations.

Security Infrastructure

The implementation follows best practices for secure webhook handling:

  • Signature Verification: Ensures that only requests signed with the correct webhook secret are processed.
  • Redis Deduplication: Prevents duplicate processing of events and ensures idempotency for retried requests.
  • Rate Limiting: Protects against abuse and ensures the system can handle Stripe’s retries without being overwhelmed.

Kubernetes Integration

Kubernetes secrets management was updated to include Stripe webhook secrets, ensuring secure deployment and access to sensitive information:

  • Environment variables were exported for Stripe API keys and webhook secrets.
  • Kubernetes secrets were configured to securely store and provide these sensitive values.

Architectural Consistency

The Stripe webhook implementation aligns with the existing SNS email webhook pattern, ensuring consistency and reliability:

  • Signature Verification: Matches the verification process used for SNS webhooks.
  • Deduplication: Uses Redis for deduplication, consistent with the SNS webhook system.
  • Rate Limiting: Aligns with the rate limiting strategy applied to SNS webhooks.

Deployment Workflow

The deployment process was streamlined to ensure secure and reliable implementation:

  1. Secrets were generated and configured in Kubernetes.
  2. The updated API was deployed with the new Stripe webhook endpoint.
  3. The Stripe dashboard was configured to forward webhook events to the new endpoint.
  4. Real secrets were applied, ensuring secure communication.

This solution enables real-time payment status updates, refund notifications, and payment failure handling, completing the payment workflow with robust security and reliability.
