Issue
The MCP RAG server crashed during startup due to an ImportError caused by a missing data deletion service. This service, required for rule Article 17 compliance (Right to Erasure), was referenced in the tool registration but not implemented. The server could not initialize, blocking all dependent services and creating a critical compliance gap.
Culprit
The implementation gap occurred because:
- The data deletion service (
data_deletion.py) was declared in imports but never created. - The server’s tool registration included a broken
delete_user_datatool that failed during initialization. - Compliance requirements for data erasure across multiple storage systems (ChromaDB, Redis, audit logs) were not fully addressed.
Solution
Data Deletion Service Implementation
A complete data deletion service was implemented to handle rule Article 17 compliance, including:
- Vector Store Deletion: Secure removal of user data from ChromaDB collections.
- Caching Layer Cleanup: Pattern-based deletion of Redis keys associated with user data.
- Audit Log Anonymization: Replacement of user identifiers with anonymized tokens in audit logs.
Security Enforcement
- Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) was added to restrict data deletion to authorized users with the
admin:rule_deletepermission. - Circuit breakers were implemented to handle failures during deletion operations gracefully.
Integration Fixes
- The broken import was resolved by implementing the missing service.
- Metrics and logging were added to track deletion operations for observability.
- Audit logs were configured to retain anonymized records for compliance audits.
The solution ensures full rule Article 17 compliance while maintaining system stability, allowing the server to start successfully with all tools operational.
