Orphaned Grafana artifacts causing repository confusion and technical debt

Configuration Management

Grafana configuration files and dashboards mistakenly committed to the repository caused confusion about the actual monitoring deployment state, as the files suggested cluster monitoring when only Azure Monitor was active. The solution involved integrating these artifacts into the GitOps workflow for proper version control and deployment.

Issue

The repository contained Grafana configuration files and dashboards that were incorrectly committed from a local development environment. These files implied that Grafana was deployed in the AKS cluster, but in reality, only Azure Monitor (Log Analytics and Application Insights) was active locally. This caused:

  • Deployment confusion: Files suggested cluster monitoring was present when it was not.
  • Version control pollution: Valuable dashboards were managed outside the GitOps workflow.
  • Architecture mismatch: Grafana was running locally rather than being integrated into the cluster’s GitOps-managed components.

Culprit

The issue stemmed from a development workflow gap where:

  • A developer created Grafana dashboards and configuration files locally during feature work.
  • These files were committed to the repository without proper GitOps integration.
  • No corresponding HelmRelease or monitoring stack deployment was present in the Kubernetes infrastructure directory.
  • Monitoring relied solely on Azure Monitor, while the Grafana artifacts suggested an alternative monitoring stack.

Solution

GitOps Integration

  1. Relocated Dashboards: Moved Grafana dashboards from local directories to a designated GitOps-managed directory in the repository.
  2. HelmRelease Configuration: Updated the HelmRelease for the monitoring stack to automatically load dashboards from the new location.
  3. Cleanup: Removed the orphaned Grafana files from the repository to eliminate confusion and ensure consistency.

Architecture Benefits

  • Single Source: All monitoring dashboards are now managed alongside the monitoring stack.
  • Auto-deployment: Dashboards are automatically deployed via GitOps tools.
  • Version History: All dashboard modifications are tracked in version control.
  • Environment Parity: Local and cluster monitoring configurations are synchronized.

This solution resolved the confusion by aligning the repository content with the actual monitoring deployment state and integrating Grafana artifacts into the GitOps workflow.
