Kubernetes cluster lacks automated GitOps deployment workflow

Manual Kubernetes deployments using `kubectl` created configuration drift between Git and cluster state. The solution involved implementing FluxCD for automated synchronization between Git repositories and Kubernetes without requiring full GitHub integration.

Issue

Manual Kubernetes deployments using kubectl commands resulted in configuration drift between the Git repository and the live cluster resources. This lack of automated synchronization led to:

  • No authoritative source of truth for cluster state.
  • Manual reconciliation requiring engineers to detect and apply changes.
  • No change detection, allowing cluster state to diverge from Git without notification.
  • Complex rollback processes requiring manual identification and deletion of resources.

Culprit

The absence of GitOps tooling led to:

  • Git serving as version control but not as the authoritative state for cluster resources.
  • Manual detection and application of changes using kubectl diff.
  • No automated notifications for configuration drift.
  • Difficult rollback procedures.

Solution

FluxCD Implementation

FluxCD was installed to automate synchronization between Git repositories and Kubernetes clusters. The core components included:

  • Source Controller: Monitors Git repositories for changes.
  • Kustomize Controller: Applies environment-specific configurations.
  • Helm Controller: Manages Helm releases declaratively.
  • Notification Controller: Provides alerts for synchronization failures.

GitOps Workflow

  1. Git Repository Integration: FluxCD was configured to monitor the Git repository for manifest changes, polling every minute.
  2. Automated Synchronization: Changes in the repository automatically triggered cluster updates.
  3. Pruning: Resources deleted from Git were automatically removed from the cluster.
  4. Helm Integration: Native support for Helm releases ensured declarative management of application deployments.

Architecture Benefits

  • Automated Reconciliation: FluxCD detects Git changes and applies them to the cluster.
  • Pruning Support: Automatically removes resources deleted from Git.
  • Helm Integration: Native support for Helm releases.
  • Local-First Demo: Works with local file paths for testing without requiring GitHub integration.

This approach resolved the configuration drift issue by aligning cluster state with Git repository content, enabling automated synchronization and rollback capabilities.
