Fast-agent framework unable to recognize vLLM provider and fails with 404 Not Found on /chat/completions endpoint | Root cause was missing enum registration and incorrect API path

Issue

The fast-agent framework failed to process vLLM requests, encountering two critical errors: an unknown provider error during initialization and a 404 error when attempting inference. This prevented the system from generating real AI responses, forcing a fallback to hardcoded templates or error messages despite the vLLM service being operational.

Culprit

Missing Provider Registration

The framework’s Provider enum lacked a VLLM entry, causing the model factory to fail during provider lookup. Although the configuration correctly specified the vLLM model, the framework’s enum-based provider system had no corresponding entry, leading to initialization errors.

Incorrect API Path

The base URL for vLLM requests did not include the required /v1 prefix, which is necessary for OpenAI-compatible API endpoints. This caused all requests to return a 404 error, as vLLM strictly follows the OpenAI API specification requiring paths like /v1/chat/completions.

Solution

Provider Registration

The VLLM entry was added to the Provider enum, and the model factory was updated to recognize and handle vLLM providers. This ensured the framework could correctly identify and utilize vLLM for model inference.

API Path Correction

The base URL construction was modified to include the /v1 suffix, ensuring compatibility with vLLM’s OpenAI-compatible API endpoints. This resolved the 404 errors and enabled successful API communication.

Validation

  • Provider Recognition: The system no longer encountered unknown provider errors during initialization.
  • API Endpoint: Successful 200 OK responses were achieved for requests to the /v1/chat/completions endpoint.
  • End-to-End: The full pipeline from email processing to AI response generation became operational, with response times reduced to under 2 seconds.

The solution maintained compatibility with OpenAI’s API specification and successfully integrated vLLM into the fast-agent framework.
