In a Kubernetes deployment for a Python-based AI processing system, environment variables loaded from Secrets and ConfigMaps displayed as empty despite containing correct values. This caused failures in integration with services like vLLM and AWS SES, leading to degraded functionality.
Issue
Kubernetes pods exhibited empty environment variables (e.g., VLLM_URL= and SES_FROM_EMAIL=) despite Secrets and ConfigMaps being updated with correct values. This resulted in:
- Failures in service integration due to missing configurations.
- Fallback to generic error responses in the AI processing system.
The issue occurred after Secrets/ConfigMaps were updated but before the affected pods were restarted, causing the environment variables to remain cached at their previous empty values.
Culprit
The root cause was Kubernetes’ behavior of capturing environment variables only at pod startup and not reloading them automatically when the underlying Secrets or ConfigMaps are updated. This led to a timing mismatch where:
- Pods were created before the environment variable updates.
- Secrets/ConfigMaps were updated during deployment scripts execution.
- Existing pods retained their cached empty values from initial startup, despite the correct values being available in the updated Secrets/ConfigMaps.
Solution
Immediate Fix: Pod Restart
To resolve the issue, a pod restart was required to reload environment variables from the updated Secrets/ConfigMaps. This was achieved by:
- Rolling Restart: Triggering a rolling restart of the affected deployment to ensure all pods reloaded their environment variables.
- Verification: Confirming that the environment variables were correctly populated post-restart.
Verification Process
After the restart, environment variables were verified to ensure they were correctly loaded from the updated Secrets/ConfigMaps. This resolved the integration issues with vLLM and AWS SES, enabling successful service calls and email processing.
Permanent Solution
To prevent similar issues in the future, the following measures were implemented:
- Deploy Script Update: Modified deployment scripts to ensure environment variables are correctly exported during future deployments.
- Automated Restarts: Updated the CI/CD pipeline to include automatic rollout restarts whenever Secrets or ConfigMaps are updated.
Results
- Service Integration: Successful connection to services like vLLM and AWS SES with correct configurations.
- Response Time: Near-instant AI processing with proper email responses.
- Stability: Elimination of cached environment variable issues through automated restarts.
